If you liked Sheltering Sky, try this one by Bowles. It's set in Fez and told from the perspective of a local boy. I loved it!

Riding the Iron Rooster, Paul Theroux
A classic about train travel in China by one of the best travel writers.

This a great, comprehensive text on black and white and color photography, darkroom techniques, lighting, etc. I got my start in photography with this text.
